The Tap Arts Project presents: An engrossing and unique blend of tap and contemporary dancing.

Welcome to the Deep South – a world swept by hurricanes, heat and hootenanny. A small shack, irreparable from torrents of weather provides a home for the unfortunate souls “left to wander in the wilderness of fiery serpents and scorpions.” Whether “lost” in the journey to the Promised Land by choice or neglect, these folk continue to invoke love, adventure and hope through their dreams despite the dog day heat. A mixture of stories drifts through the air as John Davis’ music weaves its way through the lives of the often forgotten; inhabitants of the swamps and backcountry of the Deep South. Davis* grew up near the Okefenokee swamp, a land of “trembling earth” that straddles the border of Georgia and Florida, and his illustrative debut album provides the soundtrack for the Tap Arts Project’s debut dance production: Dreams of the Lost Tribe

As a not-for-profit dance venture, the mission of the Tap Arts Project is to offer classes in a variety of dance styles at a full range of skill levels and to provide each student with individual attention, feedback and the opportunity for them to achieve their goals in an affordable, supportive, no pressure atmosphere. Since 2004 the Tap Arts Project has been hosting tap jams and workshops, performing at community events, and developing a progressive stream of tap classes based on traditional technique and rhythmic understanding. The Tap Arts Project is excited to have Dreams of the Lost Tribe as its first full length show.

The Tap Arts Project chose Dreams of the Lost Tribe because of its goal to equally merge tap and contemporary dancing to tell a story. Director and choreographer Wendy Westwood first heard John Davis’ compilation Dreams of the Lost Tribe upon its release in 2002 and after spending time with him, she got to know the man behind the music as a genuine, original musician and soul. Davis’ music and support has inspired Westwood to create a dance performance that brings his profound imagery, lyrics and history to life. Through a unique blend of tap and contemporary dance, Dreams of the Lost Tribe emerges. A cast of 10 tap and contemporary dancers have developed the choreography that allows the two dance styles to co-exist, complementing each other to create a comprehensive dance image and sound to tell a story - intertwining the rhythmic intrigue of tap dancing into the visual appeal of contemporary dancing.
