Written by Michael Palin, "The Weekend" has been described as "a riot of a comedy with an ever - present dark side .."
Written in 1994 and set (in the present) in the home of Stephen and Virginia Febble in deepest Suffolk. Expecting a quiet weekend at home, the irascible Stephen is horrified to find himself inundated with visitors... not only do his daughter, gormless son-in-law, precocious granddaughter ( and their incontinent dog) arrive to stay but his best friend, his wife and her chiropodist lover arrive for dinner. Armed with large amounts of whisky, Stephen responds in his usual fashion - with gleeful sarcasm.
Michael Palin has given us much to laugh at, but there's more than a thread of black humour , and small doses of surrealism (once a Python, always a Python?) to add to the mix.
If you want straight comedic entertainment, its there in buckets!, but there's also a poignancy that adds depth and warmth to this largely unknown work from one of the performing arts worlds' most talented artists and writers.
