From intimate portraits to grand ceremonial music, to stately opera and ballet, the spirit of Versailles infuses every note of the French baroque. Under the patronage of Louis XIV, artists such as Lully, Charpentier and Couperin produced works for the royal court which are unsurpassed in their grace and power.
Other artists were inspired by the cultural riches of the French kings to produce some of the most refined and splendid music written. One of the particular beauties of French music is the writing for Viola da Gamba, and we are delighted to have gamba player Laura Vaughan to present some of the great works by Marin Marais and Charpentier.
