Glitz, glamour and big hair camp out in Auckland this November for the spectacular return of a very queer beauty pageant

Now in its 4th fabulous year the theatrical event that delivers the campest of beauty pageants is in hot demand, with over 65% of tickets for Queen of the Whole UniverseTM being snapped up by audiences two months in advance of its November 30 performance at Auckland’s ASB Theatre.

Bringing over 50 performers to the stage to commemorate World AIDS Day, this grand spectacle parodies the hysteria, glamour and vibrant colour of the classic beauty pageant. Men and woman, young and old, gay and straight, all dress as ‘girls’ to compete for the same crown, the title Queen of the Whole UniverseTM.

Queen of the Whole UniverseTM raises funds for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation; committed to financially assisting important HIV/AIDS and community advocacy work not funded by its Ministry of Health contracts. Since its 2004 premiere, Queen of the Whole UniverseTM has been enthusiastically supported by sponsors, participants and audience. Over the past 3 years the event has fundraised over $64,000 for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation.

Each year the pageant promises audiences more and this year is no exception. “In last 3 years we have upped the competition by increasing the number of countries represented” says Director Jonathan Smith. “With the competition thriving we have turned our attention to costumes, with particular emphasis on highly elaborate headgear” says Smith. With some 2007 entrants taking to the catwalk with headgear that towers an outrageous 2 metres in height and 2 metres wide, this rich piece of costume design is fast becoming the outrageous signature accessory of this large scale event.

The ensemble of competition ‘girls’ and their entourage of ‘leather men’, that bring The Queen of the Whole UniverseTM to theatrical life are not chosen for their performance or drag experience, instead organisers look for those with the right attitude and the special something needed to rehearse, create and perform in this demanding showcase. The cast are rewarded by an enthusiastic opening night audience whose night of entertainment carries on long after the curtain falls at the afterparty and function extraordinaire…all in support of a worthy charity.
