Blackbird is an excoriating tale of misplaced love.
"Harrower's drama positively explodes with unresolved, and possibly irresolvable concerns." Sunday Herald
Fifteen years ago, Una and Ray had a relationship with life-changing consequences. Una has searched for Ray. She finds him in a debris-filled factory lunch room.
The details of their love affair spill out in mutual recollection, with changed emphasis between the two versions, culminating in an explosive conclusion.
With consummate skill and brooding ambiguity, Harrower suggests that there may be a strange affinity, tantamount to love, between people of different generations and that adult guilt and childhood innocence should never be automatically assumed.
"I have rarely seen an audience watch a new work with quite such rapt attention....Blackbird is a drama that mixes guilt, memory and desire into the most potent of theatrical cocktails....a knock-out show." Daily Telegraph
Blackbird was commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival and premiered at the Kings Theatre, Edinburgh in 2005. The production transferred to the Albery Theatre, London, February 2006
