If you go down to the woods today you're in for a big surprise. You'll find the bears are being blessed.
St Matthew-in-the-City, Auckland, located more downtown than ‘in the woods', is inviting people to bring out their bears for the special Blessing of the Teddy Bears event on Sunday 6 May.
Along with numerous furry friends Joy Cowley, the renowned New Zealand children's author, will be present to read a new story written for the occasion. There will be bear songs, bear prayers, bear fun, and of course the bear blessing.
Revd Glynn Cardy, whose blog is called Lucky Bear says, "This is a wonderful opportunity for children and adults to bring along and celebrate their cuddly friends. The service is a way to celebrate unconditional love, and that part of us that delights in giving and receiving love."
He also adds that it has a more serious side too, "Bears are both the recipients of our affection and the encouragement for us to show affection. They become and remain our friends, even when all the soft fur wears off. I pray we can always treat people as kindly as we treat teddy bears."
