Celebrating our pioneering spirit, the Royal New Zealand Ballet's TOWER Tutus On Tour travels the length of New Zealand to perform in a town nearest you.

Tutus On Tour keeps our ballet tradition alive, a tradition that is at the heart of who we are and how we began.

Now 54 years later the Royal New Zealand Ballet brings its biennial Tutus On Tour to 48 centres from Kaitaia to Invercargill. A wonderful collection of five classical and contemporary dance works, Tutus On Tour features the very best of ballet.

The 19th century Pas de Quatre by Jules Perrot with music by Cesare Pugni was choreographed in 1845, for four of the world's prima ballerinas to dance together for the first time in the same performance. It symbolises the brilliance of the Romantic ballet. Stepping up to the choreographic mark for the first time in the RNZB repertoire is company artist Andrew Simmons, who premieres Theme and Deviations that draws on both classical and contemporary dance.

Concerto Pas de Deux by the legendary choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan is set to Shostakovich's spirited second Piano Concerto. MacMillan is said to have been inspired to create this popular ballet after watching his muse, Canadian dancer Lynn Seymour, at work in class.

Cutting the contemporary edge is New Zealander Cameron McMillan, who returns home from the Rambert Dance Company in the UK. His latest work Equilibrium brings movement to the minimalist Violin Concerto of American composer Philip Glass.

The elegant Raymonda Variations is excerpted from the richly inventive ballet Raymonda, choreographed at the age of 80 by the father of classical ballet, Marius Petipa. Set to Alexander Glazunov's melodious score, Raymonda Variations illustrates the genius of this master craftsman.
