Music At Twilight
An Hour of Quality Time
New Zealand /Australia
Auckland Festival, AK07
Presented in Association with Chamber Music New Zealand
Unwind at the end of a stressful day or start your night with an hour of quality time. This early-evening music series features an eclectic mix of eight superb concerts from Australasia's finest musicians. Enjoy exquisite music before continuing on to other festival events.
The New Zealand Trio
Described as ‘dashing, young and direct' and as a ‘superbly balanced world-class ensemble', The New Zealand Trio is a champion of new music. The Trio has a passion and commitment to its craft and has inspired New Zealand and international audiences with its varied and ambitious repertoire, which includes work by New Zealand composers John Psathas and Gareth Farr in addition to works by the likes of Arvo Pärt, Schumann and Schubert.
Piano: Sarah Watkins, Violin: Justine Cormack, Cello: Ashley Brown
New Zealand String Quartet
Robert Schumann's aim was ‘To send light into the depths of the human heart'. The New Zealand String Quartet, the country's foremost chamber music group, share his goal as their programme Bright Light and Cloud Shadows will reveal. Two new works by Gao Ping and Ross Harris will be followed by Schumann's String Quartet in F major Opus 41 No. 2.
Violins: Helene Pohl and Douglas Beilman, Viola: Gillian Ansell, Cello: Rolf Gjelsten
Crayford and Friends
Playing piano in a bar in Manhattan, touring with an acid jazz band, arranging, composing and improvising - Jonathan Crayford's music defies boundaries and definitions. For him performing
is ‘a celebration of being alive'! Join Jonathan and friends for an evening of intensity, communication and groove.
BonaNZa
If you can't have 76 trombones, then try five. North to South, on trains, boats and in many other unlikely places, BonaNZa has entertained and delighted with a musical mix of favourites and unexpected surprises. These top performers hail from the brass sections of the Auckland
Philharmonia Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Vector Wellington Orchestra. Trombones: David Bremner, David Chaulk, Mark Close, Douglas Cross. Tim Sutton
University of Auckland Strings
Featuring the cream of string musicians from the School of Music, the University of Auckland Strings has developed and refined its sound and regularly gives concerts of breathtaking
quality. The concert programme includes works by Elgar, Tchaikovsky and the rarely played Sandor Verress, former pupil of Béla Bartók.
Bright Young Things
Brimming with exceptional talent and vibrancy, these young musicians perform with an excellence that belies their years. Hear tomorrow's stars today in this concert by the
finest of Auckland's young chamber musicians, including ‘Farr from Russia', the winners
of the 2006 New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest.
Australian String Quartet
The ASQ holds the distinction of having won more international chamber music competitions
than any other ensemble in Australian history. They perform a unique repertoire of outstanding
music for Auckland Festival, AK07, including work by Ravel and Australian composers
Peter Sculthorpe and Carl Vine.
Violins: Sophie Rowell and Anne Horton, Viola: Sally Boud, Cello: Rachel Johnston
"… they play with vigorous attack, quiet delicacy andintense concentration."

Trio Con Brio
From Nelson, by way of many illustrious musical ports of call, comes Trio Con Brio - an unusual combination of violin, viola and guitar. Their programme takes us on a musical journey from the elegance of 18th Century Italy to hot and steamy 20th Century South America and the tangos of Astor Piazzolla. Included is the ever popular Meditation from Thais by Massenet.
Violin: Martin Janaecke, Viola: Victoria Janaecke, Guitar: Cheryl Grice-Waterson
