Editors pick!
Bob Dylan at The Civic

Sorry, this event’s been and gone

When:

Sun 26 Aug ’07–Mon 27 Aug ’07

Where: The Civic Theatre, Corner Queen & Wellesley Sts, Auckland CBD

Event listed by: Blackout Music

Dylan is about to commence a tour of major arena shows throughout Australia and New Zealand, but this special performance will be the only theatre show in this part of the world during the tour.

“Dylan is one of contemporary music’s most influential artists, and the chance to present him and his music in the intimacy and splendour of The Civic will ensure an extraordinary experience for both the fans and the performers,” said THE EDGE® chief executive Greg Innes.

Dylan plays The Civic following a renewed creative surge over recent years that has included number one albums, a major film documentary, and his autobiography. His most recent album, Modern Times, has been greeted with wide critical appreciation, and his “Never Ending Tour” has seen audiences spanning all generations across all continents enjoy an eclectic selection of his material culled from more than 40 years of music making.

Demand has seen both the Wellington and Auckland arena concerts sell out. The opportunity to see Bob Dylan play The Civic is one that simply cannot be missed. His influence on music and popular culture since his 1963’s breakthrough album Freewheelin' Bob Dylan right through till today has been remarkable, and these shows will be memorable.

Don’t risk missing out!

Well, Winning Bob Dylan was a highlight of the year for Jarod and I.
When we arrived in Auckland we had a bit of a look around some of the bars surrounding the civic as we had a bit of time to kill before we met up with Michael and His partner. At ‘meeting time’ we headed to the civic. I have to say that the Civic is the most beautiful building I have ever seen. It was literally breathtaking and I suggest that after reading this you immediately do a search on ‘eventfinder’ and find out what gig will be playing there next and book yourselves some tickets…you wont regret it.
The civic quickly filled with that tell tale ‘folkie’ smell and fans, dressed in their best velvets and cords filled the small arena. We were really amused at how many folk actually looked like Bob Dylan.
Anyway, we met up with Michael and talked about the site and about Bob over some drinks before going in to see the show.
Michael had scored us some GREAT tickets (how did you do it mate?) We were right up there and it made the whole thing that much more exciting.
Hollie Smith was the support act and she blew the whole place away with her voice. It’s so hard to believe such a big voice can come from such a small girl. If you haven’t seen her live, do it. Again, you wont regret it.
Then of course, Bob came out with his band and was better than Good. That guy still has it. I have never seen Bob live until this point and I wasn’t disappointed. We jived and rocked in our seats and I enjoyed every song. The band were priceless- they looked very ‘new York’ with their mafia style suits and of course, the trade mark hat. The bass player was my favourite, that guy had style In a big way.
Naturally though, bob was the star. As I said, he’s still got it. He seemed at home on stage and was relaxed with his band.
The whole night was a fabulous experience.
I find myself sneaking a look on event finder almost daily for the next thing that demands my attendance.
Next gig? Joss stone and powder finger.

-Michael. Thanks aren’t enough. It really did give us a boost. Hopefully we will bump into you at a few more gigs. Don’t work too hard!-

Congratulations to Vanessa Campbell who won the 2 gold tickets to see Bob Dylan last Sunday night.

Vanessa and her husband Jarod joined some of the Eventfinder team for a great night out - we were sitting about 5 rows back from the stage, so we really felt close to the performance.

Hopefully we'll get Vanessa to write something up about the concert - they are huge Bob Dylan fans.

The competition has closed and we are currently trying to contact the winner. We'll let you know who won after we get hold of them first.

Why I should get to see Bob, an essay by a 16/39 year old woman.
So there it is High School, and I can legitimately say that as I went to Hutt Valley High. I had the biggest crush on a guy and he had the biggest crush on Bob Dylan. Teen angst, teen crushes and two teenagers who were too scared to go near each other, but happily sat up to 6 hours a night in her crappy Izzuz Bellet with a tape deck listening to Bob, she said it was rubbish (sorry Bob).

Well she is 39 now, and she quite a long time ago got it, got the Bob, and Bob has helped out in lots of ways. Bob is a favorite walking buddy and someone who picks her up and inspires.

So maybe the girl/woman should get to go see Bob, because the crush she has had on his music has lasted years and years more than the crush on the guy. P.s the guy still loves Bob, and is alive and well in London.

Slaps a apple on the desk, and grins.

I would love to take my Dad, he got me into Bob Dylan when I was growing up - taught me all the words to subterranean homesick blues, and we would both be absolutely thrilled to see him live together.

I need to see Bob because his is the only music my husband and I both like, so the only concert we could both go to together. And because he's fabulous.

I've seen the Beatles and I've seen the Stones so I need to see Bob to complete the triple crown of all time legends of the sixties.
Plus he owes me $20 .

I'd love to give these to my dad - he loves Bob Dylan as Bob is part of his era and his songs are amazing. My dad doesn't get to go to these sorts of things and Gold tickets would ensure my place as favourite daughter.

Bob Dylan music is integral to my fondest memories of when I met my fiancee. He used to sing and play it for me all the time. Now he lives 3 hours away, working hard during the week for us... He's an amazing musician, who emulates Dylan's lyrical story telling ability. We would both truly appreciate the experience, but being poor artists we can't afford it right now.

I think I should win these tickets as I would love to do something really nice for my mothers birthday. And I think this would be the best present ever!
My mother and I have always sung along to his legendary songs and think it would be a great surprise to take her.

The man is a legend in his own lifetime and the simple fact that he is still performing is reason enough to want to go and see him.

Dylan's music and lyrics came from the watershed period of the Vietnam War and other political rights activity and accordingly for that generation and others in their wake they are very poignant. I want to visit the upcoming Dylan concert because it will be like a lyrical cradle imbued with values for me and many others.

"Why would I like to see Bob play live?"

Come on. It's DYLAN! What other reason does a person need?

Except to say that seeing as Bob now looks like Vincent Price - whose birthday is almost exactly 30 years before Bob's and was about Bob's current age at the height of his fame - how often do you get a chance to see Dr Phibes on the guitar?

That's my reason anyway except to say that I'd love to ask him where he is in his spiritual walk these days.

I would love to win free tickets to Bob Dylan's concert. I am 65 and my sister at 67 have been ardent fans of his forever. In fact my favourite grand nephew is named Dylan Robert Parsons and he also listens to his namesakes music.

I thought I deserved the free tickets to Bob Dylan, but reading all these comments I now realise that lots of Eventfinder stalwarts are much more deserving than me! but I would still love to go, after being a folkie for 40 years :)

As a teenager I used to babysit my older brothers' 3 children regularly and when I wasn't sneaking a look at his porn collection I used to go through his record collection. One album I discovered in his collection around 1980 was Dylans' "SLOW TRAIN COMING" and thanks to my brother Colin I've been hooked on Dylan ever since. I have most of his albums , a book containing all his lyrics and many biographies and DVDs. Birthdays, Fathers' Day and Xmas always lavish me with something Dylan. I can play several of his songs on the harmonica and my young children know the words to many of his songs as the are forced to listen to Dylans music on long car trips. One of my teenagers is currently using " HURRICANE" as the basis of an assignment dealing with black civil rights. However, on the 11th of May this year, Colin my brother, the man who introduced me to 'Bob', the man who has provided me with a life long passion was murdered in Auckland. I would just like to win the tickets, to attend in his memory because if he were still alive we could have probably gone together.
" ... takes more than guns to kill a man, said Joe I didn't die ........."
    Thankyou Kindly for the opportunity.

I am such a music fan and love music from all genres and styles, but the one true influence over more music syles than any other artist of our time would have to be Bob Dylan.
As a writer of some of the most outstanding songs both recorded by him and others and as a performer who is not scared of politics and speaking up through his captivating lyrics Bob Dylan has to be respected.
So for this reason ,respect and pure talent I would love to see a living legend perform.

My brother is a fantastic guy, he introduced me to Bob Dylan among other things. In fact he infected the whole family with the Dylan bug. Endless late nights listening to his latest album and debating the minutaie of his lyrics - loved it, although to be honest it used to drive my mum a bit crazy at one in the morning.
But my brother died and is sorely missed. I played Bob Dyland at his funeral. Going to the concert would be a great way to celebrate my brother and Dylan, either way i reckon my brother will be there - forever young.

I’ve Got My Mind Made Up, I Don’t Think Twice as I write this to beg. If Not For You giving me FREE tickets, I’ll Be in Tears Of Rage. Please let me win tickets to see Bob Dylan. I’m a huge fan, I’ve had Hard Times, Watered Down Love and Subterranean Homesick Blues, Night After Night of Mixed Up Confusion, Living the Blues, thinking Maybe Someday, I Shall Be Released from feeling like the Ugliest Girl in the World.
I Remember a Long Time Ago when I felt Just Like a Woman when I heard his music. Bob Dylan makes me feel Forever Young. So please think of This Heart of Mine, God Knows I need something good in my life.
Hopefully, When the Night Comes Falling, I’ll be at the concert. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
