When the Magic Numbers were selling out 2000 capacity venues in London before they had even released a record there was a reason why.
Fast forward to the Big Day Out in Auckland 2006 and that reason was clearly heard by an ecstatic jammed late afternoon crowd. Performance of the day, you bet !
Its rich and glorious technicolour pop music, and the Magic Numbers captivated Ericsson fields with their sun-drenched melodies, retro sensibilities and simply great heartwarming songs. And now they're coming back.
The St James on April 12th is a mouth watering prospect. It will be the Number's first NZ headline show and with Auckland's Nudie Suits (have you seen them?) makes an irresistible cracker double billing.
Famously comprising two pairs of brother and sister Romeo Stodart (guitar, vocals), Michele Stodart (bass, vocals), Sean Gannon (drums) and Angela Gannon (melodica, percussion, glockenspiel, vocals) the Magic Numbers self titled debut album in 2005 was instantly hailed as a classic, an album of decade(s), scoring perfect tens and five review stars.
References were made to Motown and Beach Boys/Beatles era where pop sensibilities were a sign of distinct artistic vision, quality entertainment and something to be treated with pride. Whatever, the Magic Numbers had arrived in a swelter of heartwarming guitar-pop, rainy day folk and gorgeous heartbreak harmonies. The accolades poured down on them.
Now with a second album 'Those the Brokes' and new single 'This Is A Song' Romeo Stoddard's incredible songwriting remains full to the brim.
Nothing quite prepares you for the sheer beauty of The Magic Numbers' music. They are the equivalent of a big aural hug, and they're here to make your world bearable again !
Opening the show are The Nudie Suits (Lil' Chief Records) playing their colourful hawaiian/folk/rock 'n' roll with classic 60's styled pop songwriting featuring steel guitar, violin, glockenspiel and keyboards.
