The Eggner Trio were founded in 1997 by brothers Christoph, Georg and Florian Eggner. In 2003, the trio attracted international attention when they won the prestigious 4th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition.

These three young brothers from Vienna have achieved immense rapport and understanding through their years together. Mentors and tutors include Juri Smirnov (Vienna Brahms Trio), Menahem Pressler (Beaux Arts Trio), and Günter Pichler and Thomas Kakuska (Alban Berg Quartet). Georg Eggner plays a Joseph Gagliano violin (1779) and Florian Eggner a Carl Richter cello (1907). This will be the Eggner Trio's first visit to New Zealand.

Shostakovich’s tribute to his dear friend Ivan Sollertinsky is the major work in the first programme, preceded by Mozart’s trio which he wrote to be played in ‘friendly, musical, sociable circles’. It is followed by the last of Brahms’s three piano trios.

The second programme opens with Brahms’s mighty third piano trio, is followed by Shostakovich’s first foray into piano trio writing, and concludes with Beethoven’s ‘Archduke’ Trio – the last work he performed in public and the first he composed for performance by professional musicians.

"The Eggners play with an intense, musically impassioned togetherness." - The Washington Post
