Hot Red Hawke's Bay

Hot Red Hawke's Bay, a prestigious wine expo held each year in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, showcases red wines from New Zealand's premium red wine producing region.

In previous years only trade and media were able to attend the expo, but this year for the very first time all red wine lovers can meet the winemakers, sample premium red wines and be in to win a weekend in Hawke's Bay Wine Country.

Rod McDonald, winemaker at Vidal Estate and chairman of Hawke's Bay Winemakers, says the annual event offers a unique opportunity to savour the very best examples of wine from a region recognised as the red wine capital of the country.

"You'd have to spend days travelling around the vineyards of Hawke's Bay to come close to the same experience, and even then you probably wouldn't get the chance to chat with the people who actually grow the grapes and create the wine," he said.

"At Hot Red Hawke's Bay you can taste wine with the winemakers and talk with them and other winery staff about what makes our wine so special - all without even having to leave town."

Hawke's Bay has over 80% of the country's plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes. Combining new world fruit flavours with old world structure, Hawke's Bay red wines are unique in their style and are renowned world-wide.
