Heavy Traffic, written by one co-founder of Stroma for the other, is the latest in our series of short commissions featuring an NZSO “star”. Elgar’s cello concerto, made famous by Jacqueline du Pré, provides the greatest statement about the suffering of war. The Mermaid, a deeply emotional work based on Hans Christian Andersen’s story, was re-discovered after 80 years and was motivated by the composer’s own experience of rejected love.
