Vula, the box office hit of AK05 (Auckland Festival) returns to Auckland for only four performances, before opening a three week season at the Sydney Opera House.
Performed on a stage flooded with water, Vula (Fijian for moon) combines magic and illusion with traditional songs and dance to create an unforgettable and captivating piece of Pacific Island theatre.
Under the power of the ever present moon, the coral bound lagoon is a traditional place for women. Within it they fish, bathe and on its shores they dance. It is a place blending the natural, mythological and everyday - a place of sexuality, spirituality and hilarious comedy. In this sensual and beautiful production, tropical rain falls, fish swim and hibiscus flowers float in mid air.
The Conch presents Vula.
Directed by Nina Nawalowalo
Music by Gareth Farr
Featuring: Tusiata Avia, Fiona Collins, Tausili Mose and Hellen Stowers.
"nothing short of awesome… a must see" - The Dominion Post.
"a searingly beautiful work speaking volumes about Pacific life" - Capital Times.
