Where: Pukeora Estate, 208 Pukeora Scenic Rd, Waipukurau Show map
This annual Sea Sky & Bush Walk takes you through Central Hawkes Bay's picturesque farmland and historic homesteads rarely available to public view.
Walkers are based at Pukeora Estate, where you will not only experience Waipukurau Rotary's great hospitality, but you can also enjoy the panoramic views over the patchwork of the Ruataniwha Plains and up the Tuki Tuki River to the backdrop of the Ruahine Ranges.
Day 1 - Saturday 4 March
The Sea Walk takes place at Porangahau, a land steeped in maori mythology and the home of the Longest Place Name in the World.
Walkers will traverse coastal hill country with views to the Pacific Ocean. Farm tracks take you through Taikura Station and onto historic Porangahau Station. You will view beautiful Chapelwick, the original homestead, and the private chapel plus the 32 stand historic kauri woolshed. Distance: 15kms
Day 2 - Sunday 5 March
The Sky Walk begins at towards the Ranges, where good farm tracks will lead us over a saddle and onto the headwaters of the Tuki Tuki River and Moorcock's Stream. This is Makaretu, originally settled by Scandinavians. Once again walkers have the privilege of strolling across private farmland with views of the Ruahine and Wakarara Range and the panorama of Central Hawkes Bay. Distance: 15 kms
Day 3 - Monday 6 March
The Bush Walk is a shorter walk as many will be heading home. Walkers will leave from Pukeora Estate and descend through the Waipukurau Rotary's Forest of Memories, then cross onto the Tuki Tuki River providing it is at it's summer level. We will proceed onto the 200 metre solid limestone Lindsay tunnel which was once a water race.
Lindsay Bush is nearby and tracks will take us through magnificent stands of native trees towards the handsome 1882 colonial homestead of Mt Vernon. A barbecque lunch will be served on the lawn, before buses transport everyone back to Pukeora Estate. Distance: 8kms
