Oleg Marshev - Pianist

Wellington music-lovers will be delighted at the return of acclaimed Russian pianist Oleg Marshev, who will perform music by Beethoven, Schubert, and Rachmaninov, on Tuesday 22 August at St Andrew's on The Terrace, at 8.00 p.m.

On tour to New Zealand in August, Marshev’s 2006 recital programme features some of the great masterworks for piano.

Beethoven’s evocative "Les Adieux" Piano Sonata, and Schubert’s haunting "Drei Klavierstucke" are followed by resplendent works by Rachmaninov - Preludes 2 and 5 from Opus 23, and the "Corelli Variations". Two of Rachmaninov’s fiendishly-demanding Opus 39 Etudes-Tableaux pieces complete what promises to be a memorable recital.

Oleg Marshev is one of a select group of Russian-taught virtuosi who can trace their pianistic lineage back through figures such as Richter, Horowitz, Rachmaninov, and Anton Rubinstein to the origins of the Russian piano school, inspired by Franz Liszt’s visit to Russia in the 1840s.

Marshev has many illustrious competition successes to his credit, including first prizes in Spain’s "Pilar Bayona" International Piano Competition, the AMSA World Piano Competition of Cincinnati, the Concorso Pianistico Internazionale "Citta di Marsala", and the coveted "Primo Premio Assoluto" in the Concorso Pianistico Internazionale "Roma 1992". His recordings of Prokofiev’s music have been widely acclaimed.

The St Andrew’s Steinway grand piano will be on stage for this recital.
