Get Your Shakespeare Fix 2006 is a week long festival to celebrate Shakespeare's birthday. The various activities and performances take place at Palmerston North's Globe Theatre and its environs. Celebrations start on Sunday 23rd April with an Elizabethan Market Day. Experience the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Elizabethan England. A full day's programme with stalls selling produce, food, art & crafts, and entertainers providing amusements and performances.
For the theatre fans there is the rapidly paced, Mmmbeth, a comedic spoof performed by an enthusiatic and energetic cast of young people on the 25th and 25th. Another production, Two Lovers, presented by Commedia Aotearoa on the 26th and 27th is based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It is a masked perfomance of riotous proportions. Come and cheer on the lovers, hiss at the villains and laugh with the fools in a night of Commendia dell'arte. A 1.00pm matinee on the 27th allows the audience to create its own plot, characters and action when Playback Theatre meets Shakespeare. Enjoy a sumptuous, but simple, Elizabethan meal 9.30am on Saturday 29th at Brunch with the Bard before having the opportunity to appreciate a debate between theatre practitioners and academics about Shakespeare's authorship
Master classes for drama teachers and directors; a four day mask making workshop; sonnet writing, costume designing and musical composition; theatre workshops for secondary students focusing on movement, text, combat, dance, song, and music are other activities occurring throughout the week. The festivities conclude on Sunday 30th with the Manawatu-Wanganui Region Sheilah Winn Festival of Shakespeare in Schools.
